Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a coordinated attack targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory used by the IS group, according to the British defence ministry.

The location, pinpointed through surveillance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was located in hills just above the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft used Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a number of entry passages providing entry to the depot... preliminary assessments suggest the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the attack on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - referred to as Daesh - established extremist governance over large swathes of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation demonstrates the UK's leading role, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to eradicate any resurgence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the minister said.

RAF aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of the group subsequent to its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to every member of the UK armed forces involved in this mission for their expertise and their bravery," Healey commented. "Including them were thousands of UK service members deployed over the holidays. This action, to take out dangerous terrorists who endanger our safety, demonstrates how UK forces are prepared to act, continuously, keeping Britain secure at home and powerful internationally."

During December, the US military carried out what it described as a "large-scale strike" targeting Daesh sites in Syria, after an attack killed two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN estimates Islamic State still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in both countries.
