The speculation surrounding The Game Awards has been intense, particularly after host Geoff Keighley posted a puzzling photo of a desert monolith. The secret has now been solved. Larian Studios is developing a completely new Divinity game.
Titled simply Divinity, the game was showcased with a audacious trailer featuring memorable imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the very unleashing of hell.
Not the Expected Sequel
For those expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian warned that a direct sequel to its venerated RPGs is not currently in development.
That said, the developer described this new Divinity as a continuation of the core franchise. This choice of words implies that the team could be crafting a real-time experience as opposed to another tactical title. For now, it remains theory, as only a cinematic trailer is available.
A Pillar of Modern RPGs
The Divinity series is universally respected and many say it pioneered the recent resurgence of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for intricate stories, branching plots, and complex character building—elements that later reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its setting is familiar fare, what truly sets Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust bestowed upon the player.
Where many modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is full of unique possibilities that are viable by choosing a specific type of character with a unique decision path.
The series is also wonderfully flexible, allowing players to experiment throughout the entire experience. Virtually all objectives can be completed in a variety of manners, frequently in lateral fashion.
- You might progress the story because you remembered something a non-human character said.
- Or, you could bypass a challenge by moving environmental hazards in a inventive way.
More to Come
It is this design philosophy that allow people to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games ever made. Now, players can look forward to another adventure in this legendary franchise.
