Balloons carrying numerous packages of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was required to halt operations for an extended period when numerous of them entered the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments launched over the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and near the frontier with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Atmospheric equipment are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and participants so that this activity become economically unsustainable and present no risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Recent incidents in nearby states have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
